What's Happening - Current Arboretum Events

Current  Arboretum hours (May-October): Grounds open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (or sunset , whichever is sooner). Visitor Center- Store-Restaurant open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday.  (Limited selection from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Restaurant.)  Andersen Horticultural Library is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ,and Saturday and Sunday noon to 4 p.m..  The Learning Center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday & Sunday. (From June through August, the Visitor Center, Snyder Building  and Gift Store will be open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays.)   Arboretum admission is $9 for adults; free for members & youths 15 and younger.  Free on Thursday evenings after 4:30 p.m. June-August.

Culled from Johnson's photographic series "The Soul of Our Nature," these images depict the artist's evolving journey to integrate the truth and beauty about humanity's relationship with the environment. Johnson's photos are dramatic and arresting. Their intriguing close-up views, lyrical colors and abstract forms invite viewers to look deeper for new insights.

Waterosity: Go Green with a Splash Summer Exhibition
Now til Oct. 4
Free with Arboretum admission

What's bubbling up?  Fresh thinking about people, plants and water!  Waterosity celebrates this life-giving resource in thought-provoking and playful art installations and exhibits.  Here's what's on tap.... Harvest Your Rain, a new permanent display demonstrates how to re-use rainwater via a green roof, rain barrels and rain gardens!  The Cutting Edge on Lawns features displays of new water-efficient lawn grasses, including U of M research grasses, plus info on lawn irrigation and composting.  Intriguing Art in the Garden comprises 10 juried art installations celebrating water!  Free walking tours are offered every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. departing from the Oswald Visitor Center.  Catch the wave and visit Waterosity!

Weekend Family Activity - H20 on the Go!
Saturdays & Sundays, July 4-26, noon-4 p.m.
Marion Andrus Learning Center

Follow the path of a water drop in the vapor as it risees from the trees to form clouds and falls as rain into your backyard. Discover how a garden can harvest your rain.  Make your own miniature garden to take home.  Engage in soggy experiments in the Waterworks Lab.  Free with Arboretum admission.

Bog Bounce Wildflower Walk

Meet in the Ordway parking lot; fee: $10 (payable at Visitor Center), children free

This one-hour leisurely ramble focuses on what's in bloom in the woods and the stories behind the plants.   Meet in the Ordway parking lot.

Paula Lammers and Cloud Nine Jazz Concert
Saturday, July 11, noon to 2:30 p.m. (with intermission)

One of the newest jazz ensembles in the Twin Cities, this ensemble features sassy, sultry vocals, creative arrangements and an extraordinary repertoire. Enjoy this summer afternoon outdoor concert with a pre-ordered picnic basket or bring your own!  Free with Arboretum admission.

Andersen Horticultural Library Storytime

The Andersen Horticultural Library houses an impressive collection of children's books. Bring in the kids and listen to these wonderful tales during our library storytime. Free with Arboretum admission.

Arboretum Auxiliary Garden Tours
Sunday, July 12, and Tuesday & Wednesday, July 14-15
Various times, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fee: $50-$55

Tour four gardens in the west metro area via air-conditioned buses. This year's stops include a charming fairy garden, a garden among mature and stately cedar trees, a koi pond with container plantings and a meditative space with waterfall and pond. Garden owners will be available to share their experiences and answer questions. Includes lunch/brunch on the Morgan Terrace, accompanied by harp music. Go Green with a Splash Party Weekend
Saturday & Sunday, July 11 & 12
Have fun while learning all about water conservation through an informative presentation, an information fair, family activities and special performances. Includes a talk on water-efficient home irrigation systems with expert Craig Otto (9 a.m. Saturday, $20 Arb members & Chanhassen residents; $30 other, call 952-443-1422), a free water-wise info fair featuring local governments and nonprofits (11 a.m.-3 p.m. both days), free performances by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (11 a.m. & 1 p.m. both days), an "art splash" in the garden with Minnetonka Center for the Arts (noon to 2 p.m. both days); and live jazz with Paula Lammers and Cloud Nine Jazz (noon to 2:30 p.m. July 11), the Green & Blue Express family tram ride (11 a.m., 12:30, 2 & 3:30 p.m. both days) and more! Go Green! Car Raffle Drawing

McQuinn Great Hall, Oswald Visitor Center
Who will win the new Ford Fusion, named one of the top cars of 2009 by Consumer Reports?   Come and watch the drawing at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 12.  Raffle tickets, at $100 each, may be purchased at the Arboretum Gift Store until noon on the 12th.  Only 500 raffle tickets will be sold!  Need not be present to win. 

Hidden Corners' Birding Walk

Wednesday, July 15, 8:30-10:20 a.m.  (Also Satuday, July 18, and Wednesday, July 29, same times)
Fee $10 (children free)
Wander the Arboretum with a staff naturalist who has been a birder for decades and knows all the best out-of-the way trails and hidden corners for birdwatching. Learn more about our winged Minnesota neighbors (and passers through), and deepen your appreciation of the beauty their presence and song bring to the place we live in. Meet at Ordway Parking Lot.

Mid-Summer Splendor - Plein-Air Oil Painting Workshop
Wednesday-Friday, July 15, 16, and 17. 7 a.m.-12 noon 
For intermediate-advanced level. Limit:12
Per Person Fee $135/150

The flower gardens are burgeoning with a profusion of captivating color, texture and shapes. Rick Kochenash, known for his ability to capture fleeting impressions on canvas, will share his insights to help you document the beauty of the summer garden in oil paint. He will teach you his proven techniques in selection and value-mapping and help you simplify the painting process. A well-known painter and art teacher, Rick has exhibited and taught at the Arboretum, the Edina Art Center and other Upper Midwest art centers. Learn more about Rick at www.rkochenash.com. Create a seasonal arrangement that's ready to adorn your coffee table or give as a gift, using exclusive Arboretum harvested flowers and foliage. Mary Becker, a professional floral designer with 35 years of experience, will demonstrate design elements and techniques. Different seasonal materials and themes explored each month. Prairie Summer' Wildflower Walk

These one-hour leisurely rambles focus on what's in bloom in the prairie and the stories behind the plants. Enjoy the unique opportunity to meet the staff who tend our natural areas. Whether it's the brilliant prairie blazingstar, a real butterly magnet, or a flower as subtle as those of wind pollinated big bluestem, this is your chance to "talk plants with people who are passionate about them. Meet at Prairie Garden Parking Lot.

Jazz on the Prairie Big Band

Enjoy the Big Band sounds of Jazz on the Prairie, an 18-member jazz ensemble made up of members of the Eden Prairie Community Band and led by Don Bates.  Musical selections span eight decades -- from the music of Count Basie and Duke Ellington to the uptempo, rip-roaring offerings of 21st century bands such as those led by Gordon Goodwin, Bill Holman and Tom Kubis.
