Celebrate New Year's Eve on the Trail

Sunday, Dec. 31

Start the new year early with guided daytime treks (choose one or all three).  All treks depart from Visitor Center.

1. Early Bird! No Snow Birds Here
Birding trek with guide, naturalist Matt Schuth
10-11 a.m., $10 member/$20 non-member

"By the time winter snows hit the region, many of our bird species have long since departed for warmer southern climates. But a few remain, and the cold winter weather also encourages more northerly species to push south into our area."--Matt Schuth, as excerpted from his book, Nature at our Doorstep.

Some of the bird species you may see on this trek include cedar waxwings, cardinals, common redpolls, sparrows, snow buntings, evening grossbeak, red crossbill, juncos, woodpeckers, chickadees, blue jays and nuthatches.

Online registration is now closed. Limited walk-ins available on the day of the event.

2. Winter Landscapes
Winter trek with guide, Arboretum Director of Operations Alan Branhagen

"I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, 'Go to sleep darlings, till the summer comes again.' "--Lewis Carroll

Learn to identify trees and plants in their winter form. Some of the plant species you may see on this trek that supply off-season interest include evergreens, conifers, winterberries and ornamental grasses. Photo by Jason Boudreau-Landis.
