Compost

The Arboretum contracts with The Mulch Store to help manage the green waste that is
produced from the gardens.

Each year, the Arboretum produces around 130 cubic yards of green waste. It is placed in concrete bins by the gardeners and taken to the Berens site where The Mulch Store processes the material and gives about 20 cubic yards of finished compost back to the grounds staff.

The compost is measured for pH, nutrient content, texture, and moisture.

This information helps the grounds staff choose the best location within the arboretum to apply the compost.

The compost is used to help fertilize many of the gardens, as compost is a great for the health of both the soil and the plants.
