The focus of this year's conference is to inspire Master Gardener Volunteers to take action in their communities around the state Master Gardener Program priority areas: Pollinators, Clean Water, Local Food, Nearby Nature, Climate Change, Plant Biodiversity, and Horticulture Skills. The hallmark of this conference will feature hands-on sessions sharing new and cutting-edge learning about Bugs, Trees & Garden Design.

Natural companions: Inspiring combinations of plants that grow together and bloom at the very same time

Ken Druse is a celebrated lecturer, and an award-winning author and photographer, who has been called "the guru of natural gardening" by the New York Times. He is best known for his 20 garden books published over the last 25 years. This presentation will be based on his popular book, "Natural Companions: The Garden Lover's Guide to Plant Combinations". Ken will introduce ways to make an impact and protect our plants and our planet through immersion in nature using a variety of seasons, color, fragrance, foliage, grasses, wetlands and ponds, edible flowers and many more.

400 Million years on six legs: evolution of the insects

Michael S. Engel is a Research Affiliate at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He is also University Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Senior Curator of Entomology at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Dr. Engel is the author of Innumerable Insects: The Story of the Most Diverse and Myriad Animals on Earth (Natural Histories) and coauthor of Evolution of the Insects, and author of numerous entomological treatises.
