Best Places to Beat the Heat

As all residents know, even though it's a northern state, Minnesota gets its share of hot, sticky days in the summertime. But there's no shortage of places to find relief from the summer heat at the Arboretum. Dense shade can differ in temperature from full sun by as much as 10 to 15 degrees! So when the heat gets to be too much, just find one of these delightfully cooler spots to relax and cool down....

MORGAN TERRACE

Tucked in the back of the Snyder Building, the Morgan Terrace is a lovely area with dense shade. The terrace is surrounded by lush hanging and standing planters, artfully designed with moss, vining plants and a rainbow of annuals. Take a load off at one of the many wrought iron patio tables and chairs, and gaze out at the MacMillan Garden with its beautiful and colorful tall annuals.

WATERFALL BOARDWALK

From the Morgan Terrace, take a leisurely stroll toward the Slade Perennial Garden and you will come across a waterfall that cascades under the walkway. To your left is a shady boardwalk that is lined with wooden benches. This is a great place to not only get out of the sun, but also for quiet reflection with the sound of water flowing all around.

JAPANESE GARDEN

Exit the Visitor Center on the second floor, and the Japanese Garden is right across the roadway. Surrounded by dense trees and brush, this Garden offers an abundance of shade. An immediate sense of calm greets visitors as they enter, even though it is right next to the road. A tall waterfall rushes down to create a pond teaming with playful coy fish. And a rustic tea house makes the perfect spot to sit and enjoy the special ambiance.
