What's Happening - Current Arboretum Events

Current Arboretum hours (May - October):  Grounds open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day; Visitor Center-Gift Store-Restaurant open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, & Friday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday; Andersen Library open 8 a.m. -4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday & noon-4 p.m. Sunday.  Arboretum admission is $7 adults; free for members & youths 15 and younger; free for everyone Thursdays after 4:30 p.m.

May Weekend Family Program: Blooming Baskets
Saturdays and Sundays, May 3-31

Delight in the ever changing array of colorful spring flowers at the arboretum. Take a bee's eye view inside blossoms and discover flower secrets with our scope-on-a-rope. Weave your own May basket and then plant a miniature spring garden inside to take home with you.

Quick and Easy Curries - Cooking Class

Here's a great way to incorporate easy curries into your weekday meal routine - for the vegetarian and meat-eater alike.  Menu: Cabbage and Cucumber 'Slaw' with Roasted Peanuts, Yellow Split Peas with Golden Raisins, Potatoes and Spinach in Garlic-Red Chili Sauce, Braised Okra and Tomatoes, Basmati rice with Saffron.  Features multi-course meal with three complementary wines. 2008 Summer Exhibition - 'TREEOLOGY'

Opens May 24
This family-friendly, interactive exhibition celebrates the beauty and wonder of trees. The exhibition comprises the Art 'n Trees Trail art walk featuring 18 juried works of interactive public art inspired by trees (with cell-phone audio tour); a "Grown Home" open-air rustic birch retreat with grown-in-place, living willow furniture; a "Tree-mendous Trees" walk encompassing favorite Arboretum trees (with cell-phone audio) and  the Tree Discovery Zone, a hands-on outdoor lab offering tips on tree care. Plus, every first and third Saturday of the month, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., professional tree-care advisors will be here to answer your questions. "Treeology" continues through Oct. 12 and is free with Arboretum admission.

Ladyslippers Wildflowers Walk

Enjoy a leisurely and informative one-hour ramble led by an Arboretum staff member to discover what's in bloom in the woods and learn the stories behind the plants.  This is your chance to "talk plants" with people who are passionate about them.   Free with Arboretum admission.

Tunes and Tales in the Trees- Free Family Performances

MN Rose Society Demonstrations
Wilson Rose Garden, 8 a.m. - noon Saturdays April 19 & 26, May 3, June 7, Oct. 11 & 18
Minnesota Rose Society members demonstrate various rose-gardening techniques. Here's the schedule: April 19, rose-lifting;  April 26, planting bare root roses; May 3, rose pruning; June 7, mulching roses; Oct. 11, tying roses; and Oct. 18, tipping roses. Free with Arb admission.

Free Concert Featuring Two Rivers Chorale
Saturday, June 7, 1-2 p.m., Snyder Building Auditorium
This talented choral group, under the direction of Timothy Sawyer, will perform a free concert of crowd-pleasing gospel, patriotic and traditional music in the Snyder Building Auditorium.  Free with Arboretum admission ($7 adults; no charge for members & youths 15 and younger). 'Photographing People' Workshop

Toast & Taste: In the Gardens at the Arboretum
Friday, June 13, 6-9 p.m.
A garden party featuring farm-grown Minnesota food, wine, beer and entertainment. Participating restaurants include: Vincent, Minneapolis Club, Corner Table, Barbette, 5 Course Catering, Gardens of Salonica New Greek Cafe, Green Room and more. Sunday, June 22, all day; main events from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A celebration of the Arboretum's birthday with cake, crafts, entertainment and exercise for the whole family. Includes a Birthday Bash Dash 1K Family Fun Run/Walk with KARE-11's Kim Insley at 10:30 a.m.;  Raptor Center demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 1:05 p.m.; Swedish fiddler Ross Sutter at 12:10 p.m. & 2:15 p.m.  Free birthday cupcakes & ice cream from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Plus free Arboretum tram rides. 'Art in the Garden' Plein-Air Oil-Painting Workshop with Rick Kochenash

Fee: $390 members/ $425 non-members
What could be finer than a summer's day at the Arboretum? How about four days, immersed in summer light and color, brush and palette in hand, with nothing to do but paint?  Join popular artist and teacher Rick Kochenash for a guided one-on-one learning experience in the Arboretum gardens. Fee includees light supper Thursday, breakfast and lunch on Friday and Saturday, brunch on Sunday, plus Arboretum admission, individualized instruction for four days, transport of equipment and meals if desired, final critique, celebration and sharing of artwork.  Rain or shine.
