The garden season is winding down. Besides the five "Veggies By The Yard" gardens, our 40 x 60 fenced-in area consists of a butterfly garden, pond, seating area, compost bins, rain barrels, fruit garden and pumpkin patch. The vines on the pumpkins and gourds are succumbing to blight/mildew. It’s very easy to tell which areas need compost next year; the fruits are small and the soil is hard as a board. The second plantings did not handle the heat well. Rabbits found openings in the fence and helped themselves to their share of the bounty.
A Harvest Party is planned for September 2. Produce will be harvested and prepared by youth and adults into a meal headlining the garden’s abundance: Honey roasted root vegetables, garden minestrone and zucchini chocolate chip cookies. Families, volunteers & sponsors are invited for the meal. Master Gardener Pam will help the youth put together centerpieces featuring our own garden grown flowers, pumpkins and gourds.
After the youth are back in school, the remaining harvest will be picked by Master Gardeners and donated to the local food shelf. Hopefully this garden experience has had lifelong effects on the children. Maybe they'll talk their non-gardening parents into growing a few vegetables. I know they have a greater appreciation for where their food comes from and the sweat equity involved into getting it to the table.
