SummerTIME at the Arboretum!  Top 10 signs of the season...

1. Leaning back on the lawn and listening to live family entertainment at Tunes and Tales in the Trees. Delight in the wonders of nature as presented by puppeteers, storytellers, musicians, dancers and artists. (6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Thursdays when admission is free after 4:30 p.m., Trex Deck near Ordway Picnic Shelter.)

2. Going out on a Limb and Enjoying Treeology!  From the 1.5 mile Art ‘n' Trees Trail (with 18 art installations) to the Grown Home retreat filled with living willow furnishings - there's something for everyone in this year's summer exhibition. Plus, check out the Tree Discovery Zone with Tree Care Advisors on duty the 1st and 3rd Saturday in August and September; 11 to 2 p.m.  

3.  Checking out the newly renovated Pillsbury Shade Tree Exhibit along Three-Mile Drive.  You'll just love the outdoor lounge chairs under the boughs!

4. Viewing late-blooming wildflowers on a guided one-hour nature walk. (10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 (meet at Ordway Parking Lot), $5.

5. Is that a yellow-bellied flycatcher? It's time for summer birding walks with an Arboretum naturalist! (8:30 a.m. Aug. 16 & 27, Ordway Parking Lot, $5.)

6. Oohing & aahing at the eye-popping designs and blooms during FlowerFest Weekend!  Two great flower shows -- the 26th annual Arboretum Flower and Garden Show, co-sponsored by the Federated Garden Clubs of Minnesota, and the Minneapolis Men's Garden Club's Food, Flower and Foto Show -- will fill MacMillan Auditorium on the weekend of Aug. 16 & 17, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., plus check out displays hosted by herb, daffodil and iris societies in the Great Hall. Free with Arboretum admission.  

7. Giving the Maze Garden one more try!  Seriously, we haven't lost anyone yet! (Near Ornamental Grasses on Three-Mile Drive.)

8. Viewing "Timeless Beauty," a photo exhibition of John Gregor's Arboretum images through the seasons, on display in the Reedy Gallery of the Oswald Visitor Center now through Aug. 17. 

9.  Shopping for fresh produce, breads and U of M meats at the SummerHouse Garden Market. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at Rolling Acres Road & State Hwy. 5.

10.  Classes for young and old! Gather up the kids for Free Family Drop-in Weekend Fun from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday & Sunday at Andrus Learning Center.  Or enroll in a Rain Gardening class (Saturday, Aug. 23, 1-3 p.m. $15 for Chanhassen residents; $20 Arb members; $30 others) or a "Restaurateurs of the Year"  cooking class with Lucia Watson of Lucia's (Thursday, Aug. 21, 6:30-9 p.m., $50/$60).
