Position Title: Public Policy Program Coordinator General Information: The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum features more than 1,000 acres of magnificent gardens, model landscapes, and natural areas-from woodlands and wetlands to prairie-with extensive collections of northern-hardy plants. The Arboretum is part of the Department of Horticultural Science within the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota. Our mission is to provide a community and national resource for horticultural and environmental information, research and public education; to develop and evaluate plants and horticultural practices for cold climates; and to inspire and delight all visitors with quality plants in well-designed and maintained displays, collections, model landscapes, and conservation areas. Position Description: The primary responsibilities of this position are to develop and coordinate public policy forums, symposiums, and programs that contribute to the Arboretum's overall mission and strategic goals. These programs are intended to provide an arena in which to address important environmental, bio-diversity, natural resources, horticultural, educational, and sustainability topics (i.e. such as water quality, responsible landscaping, plant ecology, and land conservation). Key program expectations are; defining and framing current issues for intended audiences, recruiting and featuring speakers to convey cutting edge research, and encouraging participants to seek solutions that impact public policy discussions. The Public Policy Program Coordinator is also responsible for fiscal management of the program. This position is part of the Education Department at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and reports to the Director of Education. The salary range for this position is 32,500 - 50,000 annually, depending on education and experience.
Required Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in public affairs, public policy, planning, education administration, communication/public relations, and one year relevant administrative experience or a combination of education and relevant administrative experience to total five years. One year of work experience in one or more of the following subject areas is also required; horticulture, natural resources, agriculture, landscape design, plant ecology, community organizing, conference planning, facilitation, public speaking. Must have experience working with MSWord, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Desired Qualifications: Desired Qualifications: Advanced education in public affairs, public policy, planning, education administration, or communication/public relations. Knowledge of local, regional, and statewide organizations, groups, businesses, government agencies, and individuals that are stakeholders in issues such as environmental, bio-diversity, natural resources, horticultural, educational, and sustainability topics (i.e. such as water quality, responsible landscaping, plant ecology, and land conservation). Experience engaging and motivating multiple stakeholder groups to work towards a common goal, for example; working on a campaign. Experience in budget management and desktop publishing also desired.
Public Program Coordinator Responsibilities: Program Development & Coordination 85% • Plan, manage and facilitate monthly forums, symposiums and programs related to public policy issues sponsored by the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. • Develop a local, national, and international network to support the Arboretum's public policy programs. • Research, advise, and identify current topics of interest, working closely with policy advisory groups from within the Arboretum, University of Minnesota, key nonprofit organizations and associations, and general public to procure speakers and ancillary panels for programs. • Manage budget to reach or exceed annual targeted goals and financial quotas. • Evaluate and report findings, outcomes and documentation related to each event. Internal Coordination/Collaboration 15% • Work closely with the Director of Education and Arboretum Administration and staff in support of institutional strategic goals and objectives. • Communicate regularly with in-house Arboretum staff to coordinate and schedule activities, manage Public Policy scholarship fund, and assist with the following tasks when relevant to policy program management: marketing and PR, web site development, registration system design and review, accounts receivable, and volunteer management. • Work closely with appropriate Arboretum departments to identify sponsors, partnerships and additional funding sources in support of public policy program activities and events. Assist and support the development/grant writing staff. • Develop communication and public relations materials for internal and external awareness of public policy programs.
