Full Exposure: Images to Change the Future Photography Symposium 2011
Basic Digital Photography Immersion For photographers wanting to learn more about their digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera. This hands-on class covers all essential operations of your camera. Gain understanding of white balance, histograms, correct exposure, aperture, shutter speed, jpeg versus raw files, camera operating modes, composition, and other essentials and insights. Bring it all together while shooting on the Arboretum grounds. Bring all camera equipment and manuals and tripod. John Pennoyer (www.impressionsofnature.net) specializes in photographing animals in their habitat. His work has been used by many publications including Bowhunter, Peterson Bowhunting, Game and Fish, Lake Country Journal, Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, and Weatherguide Calendars.
Shooting the Light After understanding photography fundamentals, you can improve your photography by comprehending the role of natural light. Accomplished photographer John Pennoyer will help you "see the light" to improve your digital images. Discuss temperature of light, difficult lighting situations, Graduated Neutral Density filters, diffusing and reflecting light, backlighting and side lighting techniques. Find out what is the best type of light for various subjects and what is the best white balance to use on various lighting situations. Friday afternoon, shoot on the grounds for sunset, twilight and perhaps some night photos. Saturday starts at dawn to capture sunrise images. Wrap-up with a class slide show including images shot during the week-end.
Photo Workshop: Arboretum in Autumn Color Capture the Arboretum's incomparable fall colors under John Gregor's expert instruction (www.coldsnap.com). Classroom training combines with field exploration to help you see better pictures, capture images in Raw mode, use proper white balance, fine-tune compositional skills and exposure, and address post-processing concerns. You will learn how to assemble a body of photographic work and prepare images for exhibition. Bring a digital camera and a USB-card reader for your camera. A laptop and flash drive are recommended, but not required.
Full Moon, Winter Light: Photographing Winter Wonders Note: Students should bring all of their camera equipment and owner's operating manual for their camera and a small flashlight. Also the 3 Mile Drive will be closed, so students will be doing some walking along the drive and proper clothing and footwear for the weather conditions is recommended.
Once the first snow arrives many photographers put their camera away and don't bring it outside again until spring. Yet winter is one of accomplished photographer John Pennoyer's favorite seasons for shooting (http://www.impressionsofnature.net/). During this special course he will discuss all aspects of winter photography: how to dress to protect yourself and your gear from the elements, winter light, correct exposure for winter landscapes, and shooting in very cold weather. Winter is also one of his favorite times for shooting the full moon and night sky, and the session occurs on the evening of a full moon rise. You will spend plenty of time capturing winter landscape and full moon images on the grounds of the Arboretum.
