Photography Symposium
Spend the day with fellow hobbyists and professional photographers, who will share their tips and techniques for improving your photographic skills. Presenters include John Pennoyer, whose expertise is photographing animals in a natural setting; Dan Marshall, people in gardens and natural areas; and John Gregor, nature, gardens, travel and architecture. Be sure to bring your camera and come early and/or stay late to practice your techniques in the Arboretum's inspiring 1000-acre setting. Participation in a photography workshop includes an invitation to participate in the December student exhibit/sale.

Arboretum Shoot-Out!
Join amateur and professional photographers and take all the time you want photographing the Arboretum during this three-day shoot-out. When you've finished shooting, select one favorite image from your efforts and enter it in a people's choice contest. The top three images selected in various categories will prevail as the "Shoot-Out Best." An entry packet with rules and guidelines will be mailed to participants prior to the event. Participation in a photography program includes an invitation to participate in the December student exhibit/sale.

Photographing People
Photographer Dan Marshall, (www.danmarshallphoto.com) combines classroom instruction with field exploration to teach you how to photograph people. Subject matter is sure to be abundant with the Arboretum's Waterosity exhibit in full swing, and you will have the opportunity to review your images at the end of the day. Participants are required to bring a digital camera, and a USB-card reader for their camera. A laptop and flash drive are recommended, but not required. Participation in a photography workshop includes an invitation to participate in the December student exhibit/sale.

Photographing the Ecosystems of the Arboretum
Prerequisite: Single-lens reflex camera, tripod, and good understanding of how to operate equipment
Join John Pennoyer (www.impressionsofnature.net) and spend two days trekking, shooting, and learning about four ecosystems contained within the Arboretum grounds: woods, prairie, bog, and wetlands. Friday includes orientation, sunset/moonrise photography in the field, and dinner. Saturday includes sunrise and early-morning photography in the field, a hearty breakfast and lunch. The second day concludes with time to share images from the workshop with your instructor and classmates. Participation in a photography workshop includes an invitation to participate in the December student exhibit/sale.

Photographing Plants and Flowers - Field Photography
Join a small group in this hands-on learning opportunity to improve your photography skills. Photographer Mark Paulson (www.mnartists.org/Mark_Paulson) will take you to some of his favorite locations at the Arboretum and provide tips and advice on photo composition, technique and digital camera use. Mark has provided the arboretum with numerous images for use in advertising, the Arboretum website, displays and images for Arboretum calendars, postcards and greeting cards. Bring your digital camera to class.
