Ornamental Grasses & Turf

Grasses

Mary Hockenberry Meyer, Ph.D.
One of the largest collections in the United States, the Arboretum's grass collection contains over 200 ornamental and native species. Associate Professor Mary Meyer evaluates these plants for winter survival, flowering time, growth habit, self-seeding, and winter interest. Dr. Meyer conducts research on ornamental grass propagation, and prairie restoration involving several grasses including little bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Miscanthus. She also has trialed several materials as alternative low maintenance turfgrasses. She is the State Coordinator of the University of Minnesota Master Gardener Program.
