Get a jump start on growing seedlings without a greenhouse. Learn how to build your own grow light and how to use it to maximize your growing season. Don Guggemos is a gardener who grows many of his seedlings for his large garden in Winsted, Minnesota.

Many grasses have more than one season of interest because of their attractive foliage color and texture, distinctive plant habit, showy floral and fruiting structures. Find out which perennial and annual ornamental grasses are easy to grow in your garden. Steve Horan grows a number of hardy and non-hardy ornamental grasses in his garden in Woodbury, MN. He works them in with his large collection of daylilies and other perennials.

Neil Bealka, Past President of the Washington County Horticultural Society, has gardened with perennials for many years and has been involved with the Washington County Master Gardener Program for many years.

Intermediate Level - Selecting & Using Native Plants (150-04-24-10-2)
Building on the introductory session in the morning, you will have an opportunity to learn how to use the Plant Selection tool created by the teacher. Various habitats are organized in an easy to use matrix. Container Gardening (150-05-01-10)
Create colorful designs by breaking from convention and make unexpected combinations of color, texture, height, form, seasonal interest, and color progression for your containers. Class is lecture and demonstrations. Duane Otto is a Landscape Gardener at the Arboretum and has been designing the Arboretum's annual gardens and planters since 1989.

Learn the principles of IPM (Integrated Pest Management) by understanding pesticide use, biological and non chemical use, chemical approaches, insect identification, and preventive measures that every gardener can and should do. Dan Miller is the Arboretum's Integrated Pest Management Specialist.

He and his wife previously owned an apple orchard. Currently he is Director of Operations at the Arboretum.

Includes a visit to various grape growing sites. Meet at the HRC (near the Apple House) 1 mile west of the Arboretum entrance. Sue Riesgraf, formerly the Vineyard Manager at the HRC (Horticultural Research Center) at the Arboretum, was involved with the grape research project for 4 years.
