With all the great summer produce coming up, do you need a few ideas for cooking and eating the bounty? Consider these:
--Cookbook: The Arb has a new cookbook, "Flavors of the Arboretum: 101 Tastes of the Season," a first-ever, limited-edition cookbook featuring recipes from popular guest chef instructors from Arboretum cooking classes, chef or food experts from summer exhibitions and resident Arboretum chefs. You'll also find treasured recipes from the Arboretum's original Tea Room. Available at the Arboretum Gift Store for $18.95. Or order by calling (952) 443-1439 or visiting the Online Gift Store
--Recipes: The chefs and foodies participating in our Cooks' Faves 'n Raves garden have supplied great recipes for the produce they have suggested we grow. Ten great recipes contributed by local restaurateurs and chefs, including KARE-11-TV's Bobby Jensen and Belinda Jensen and foodie Sue Zelickson.
--For more ideas, check out Arb's cooking classes, including an exciting new culinary series, 4X4, starting in September.
Our theme this weekend is the prairie. You're invited:
--Saturday, Aug. 13: Join us on a Walk for the Curious (the Prairie), 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Or participate in our Summer Plein-Air Watercolor Workshop: Bennett-Johnson Prairie, 9:45 a.m. to 1p.m. To register or for more information: visit www.arboretum.umn.edu/learn.aspx or call (952) 443-1422.
--Saturday and Sunday: Weekend Family Fun: Prairie Natives, noon-4 p.m. both days, Learning Center. Search for late bloomers that flower in prairie meadows and look for butterflies and birds that call the prairie home. Discover how long the roots are on prairie plants and braid a sweetgrass bundle. Free with admission.
--Between visits to the Arb, take a virtual guided walk via our new Nature Notes blog.
--For more nature at the Arb, spend a moment with "Nature Song," a new song inspired by walks at the Arboretum, performed by Minnesota Celtic/folk band Locklin Road. Then join Locklin Road this weekend in concert at the Arb, performing outdoors on the Trex Leaf Deck, Sunday, Aug. 14, 6-7:30 p.m. Bring a picnic supper and spread out on the lawn by the Ordway Shelter. Free with gate admission.
