Greetings, Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners!

My name is John Bartram.

I am the King's Gardener.

I will have the distinct pleasure of sharing my story with you...

...at the
2016 Extension Master Gardener Statewide Conference
on
Friday, June 24, 2016
at the
Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

It's been 317 years since I was born.

I am a third-generation Pennsylvania Quaker, and have been described as imbued with a curiosity and reverence for nature, as well as a passion for scientific inquiry.

In the year 1728, I purchased 102 acres from Swedish settlers and systematically began gathering the most varied collection of North American seeds and plant specimens in the world.

Prominent patrons and scholars in Britain sought out plants from my Garden. My famous garden was a source of inquiry and pleasure for luminaries like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

In 1765, I was granted the honor of being appointed
the "Royal Botanist"
by King George III.

key note speaker dramatist lecturer author presenterAlong with my advanced age comes extraordinary wisdom.

My unique and masterful knowledge of the horticultural history of America starts at the very beginning of the international world of plant discovery and identification.

The primary lesson I have learned is:

We all need to remember and know that Horticulture (with a capitol "H") provides us with nourishment for body and soul.

Horticulture promises the future.

Horticulture confirms our place in the natural order.

Horticulture is our future.

ADDITIONALLY...

...allow me to introduce my alter-ego,

Kirk R. Brown

An accomplished Horticulturist, Kirk Brown exists to expand my outreach and report on my experiences, travels, and extemporanea to an expectant public.

A recipient of the Pennsylvania Nursery and Landscape Association "Green Achiever" Award for advancing horticulture in Pennsylvania, Kirk R. Brown serves as business manager of award-winning Joanne Kostecky Garden Design, Inc. in Allentown PA.

Gardens that he has designed and installed have been presented with "Outstanding Design Awards" by PLNA and the Perennial Plant Association. They have also been recognized with a Pennsylvania Green Award by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Pennsylvania Green Commission.

Articles by him and/or over his byline have appeared in the following: Homestyle and Gardening (A Family Circle Magazine), American Nurseryman, Green Scene, From the Ground Up, Pleasure of Gardening (ANLA), New Ideas (ANLA), How to Work with the Media (ANLA), Quill and Trowel (GWA), The Morning Call, Parkland Press, Emmaus Press, Builder/Architect: Eastern Pennsylvania Edition, and Featured Views (The newsletter he produces for Garden Design)

I have invited Kirk Brown, as my alter-ego, to share his wisdom with you during a breakout session (after my Keynote Address, of course)

IN CLOSING...

Allow me to throw modesty to the wind and leave you with some reviews of my work.

I look forward to meeting you soon and sharing my passion for the botanical world.

"Kirk Brown did not imitate John Bartram, he actually became him. His gallery of pictures and quotes and his performance added up to an electrifying and edifying performance. Anyone who has an interest in history or horticulture will be spellbound by this presentation."
Stephanie Cohen Author/lecturer

"Kirk's portrayal of America's first world-class plantsman is a masterful blend - passionate, humorous, moving, educational but never pedantic. Meticulous research and an obvious affection for the subject enables him to fully inhabit the role, not just the costume. John Bartram took a skeptical audience first by surprise and then by storm."
John Friel, Green Leaf Perennials/Yoder Brothers

"John Bartram may have passed away in the year of 1777, but I feel as if I know him. Some of his wisdom has been imparted to me. The greatest compliment I can give for this transcendent moment is that Kirk left me with a smile on my face and a tear in my eye."
Jimmy Turner, Director, Horticultural Research Dallas Arboretum
