Waterosity Preview: "Take Back the Tap"
Beginning Sunday, March 15, visit the Galleria in Edina to see a sneak preview of "Take Back the Tap: Protect Our Environment" - one of 10 juried artworks that will be part of this summer's Waterosity: Go Green With a Splash exhibition at the Arboretum.
Intended to promote awareness of the environmental effects of excessive plastic bottle usage, "Take Back the Tap" is an enormous plastic water bottle sculpture that measures 23’ long, 7 ½’ high and 10’ wide. Located at the Galleria’s west end, the sculpture will be surrounded by native Minnesota plants and grasses to serve as a reminder that less than 20 percent of plastic bottles are actually recycled. The art was created by Debra A. Ensteness, owner of Landscapes by Dae, and Sheila Hawthorne, founder of Hawthorne Landscape Designs. Most Galleria stores will participate in a ticket giveaway for the Arboretum's Waterosity summer exhibition. Preview partners are Galleria and Plantscapes.

Tree tapping & more spring happenings
The Arboretum staff began tapping maple trees last week. Because of the cold temperatures, it was a slow process that yielded only about 20 drops of sap per minute. The sap flow is based on freezing temperatures at night and temperatures above 40 during the day. Sunny days are ideal and can yield about 120 drops of sap per minute. As for other spring activity, on warmer days, you might see the honeybees making their cleansing flights. Early flowers will provide them with pollen. In the trees, the smallest and most common American woodpecker, the Downy Woodpecker, is actively drumming on the trees and if you visit the wildflower garden, you might glimpse a pair of barred owls keeping company there. As the days get longer, the male wild turkeys (gobblers) are busy parading and displaying their feathers for all the hens to see. Another mating ritual the gobblers perform is drumming. The male turkeys do this by beating their wings on the sides of their bodies. Drumming is usually done in the earliest part of the spring breeding season.
Enjoy the Arboretum’s maple syrup at the 23rd Annual Sugarbush Pancake Brunch, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29. Experience the ultimate all-you-can-eat pancake brunch complete with sausage, juice, milk and coffee. Before or after brunch, experience maple syruping activity stations led by staff and volunteers.
