This position serves as a technical developer to oversee the setup, configuration, and long term strategy of web infrastructure and applications. We are looking for a self-motivated and creative problem-solver with experience and skills in backend web CMS (Drupal) development, advanced web coding, and large scale site planning. In this job, the Developer will design, maintain, and constantly improve our Drupal environment, as part of the University’s enterprise system, collaboratively developing code experiences with the central Drupal team and improving experiences and online engagement opportunities for web audiences.
This position will work closely with members of the marketing team, taking brand and graphic design direction from the Marketing Programs Manager and content strategy direction from the senior communications manager. This position will work across the Arboretum to support each department’s web presence. It will work closely with CFANS and central University of Minnesota Offices of Information Technology on various web projects and mass email to continually build on and improve the performance of our site KPIs and ensure a positive user experience for staff, donors, visitors and guests.
The Web Developer is responsible for collaboratively implementing the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s online vision for outreach, research, and education via creative use and integration of University-supported tools and data.

Overview of Responsibilities
Web Manager (Front-end development and web design) (60%)
• Responsible for designing and implementing new features and functionality, establishing and guiding the website’s architecture, ensuring high-performance and availability, and managing all technical aspects of the CMS. Works closely with Marketing team ensure an effective, visually appealing, and intuitive implementation.
• Testing, maintenance and troubleshooting of existing organizational sites
• Stays up-to-date on the U of M’s Drupal Platform, informs the Arboretum of relevant new technologies or changes, and passes feedback to central Drupal team on the Arboretum’s needs
• Develops and maintains technical documentation for CMS implementation, applications, and relevant business processes. Train users and team members as necessary.
• Informs the web development project prioritization/portfolio for Arboretum’s web sites.
• Evaluates, recommends, and implements web infrastructure/platform changes and improvements.
• Conduct a full range of programming tasks which include program design, program coding, debugging, and documentation for the Arboretum’s websites; review application modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards.
• Develop and collaborate on concepts, wireframes and prototypes for interactive/screen-based experiences based on organizational goals and audience insights; implement these concepts using strong design that presents content effectively.
• Refine existing styles and tools or create new ones to fit user needs, provide ongoing maintenance of applications, systems, websites, and tools; make decisions to meet the needs of the individual site and work across the system to be sustainable and consistent.
• Undertake special projects as they arise, such as special webpages and microsites to support Arboretum initiatives, interactive user features, and enhancement to increase search engine optimization.
Web system architecture and application development (30%)
• Perform general server and database administration tasks (in collaboration with IT Manager).
• Informs decisions on Arboretum’s web system architecture, configuration, web services, and applications infrastructure
• Ensures Arboretum and University security and stability requirements are met regarding web and applications management.
• Monitor how the content and design is working on the overall college-wide system of websites, with a focus on effective web and visual design, web contributor needs, user experience, usability and accessibility.
• Maintains specific online and business applications, primarily using the .NET framework.
• Provides expertise to project teams on complex technical design and systems integration projects.
• Fosters IT partnerships and relationships throughout the University to continue to streamline Arboretum operations by leveraging central resources.
• Research new ideas and methods; stay aligned with best practices.
• Improve the theme and suite of tools by listening to needs of digital team and people contributing content; identify and suggest solutions.
• Complete other technology-related tasks as assigned.
• Prepare systems test data and prepares program documentation.

• Ensure responsive design is applied well across all Arboretum sites, including departments and centers.
Project Management (10%)
• Develops strong relationships to aid in understanding the varying needs around a project. Applies gathered requirements to web and application based solutions.
• Ensures the Arboretum’s application projects are developed effectively and efficiently, using unambiguous project goals and expectations, and ensuring input and feedback from all stakeholders
• Manages any outsourced application and database development.
• Document and test work, such as testing across multiple browsers and devices and other quality control efforts.
• Communicate frequently with communication and design team members on the needs of the Arboretum web community; contribute to training development and documentation. For most Arboretum web contributors, their web role is a small part of their overall duties. The role of this position is to make the Arboretum system and tools easy to use and provide training as needed.
• Provide user support and customer service, working with team members to troubleshoot issues when they arise.

—Extension Educator--Horticulture, Vegetable/Fruit Production
This Extension Educator (EE) will focus on vegetable/fruit-based horticulture, serving targeted public audiences along with the statewide "fresh market" industry. Coordination with internal Extension groups such as the consumer horticulture team, State Master Gardener program, and commercial horticulture team are expected. This EE position will provide statewide technical expertise and educational programming leadership for conventional and organic fruit and vegetable production in Minnesota. The EE will design, develop, implement and evaluate research-based educational programming on vegetable/fruit production practices including cultivar selection, season extension, and integrated pest management. The EE will work with producers who are marketing vegetables/fruit through wholesale, farmers markets, CSAs, etc. as well as growing vegetables/fruit for their own consumption.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Specialist - Full Time
The Arboretum is seeking an IPM Specialist responsible for coordinating and applying, conducting research, and developing educational programs for integrated pest management (IPM) at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Integrated pest management (IPM) is an approach to pest control that uses regular monitoring and recordkeeping to determine if and when treatments are needed. It employs a combination of strategies and practices to keep pest numbers below established treatment threshold levels. This position is responsible for monitoring the security of a variety of the University of MN Landscape Arboretum buildings and properties. The Security Patrol provides support for the safety and security of Arboretum guests; provides information to Arboretum guests in the gardens and ensures that visitors do not damage exhibits, displays or objects through misuse and reports any visible damage to the supervisor on duty. This position is normally non-supervisory but occasional lead worker responsibilities may be assigned.
90% Provide Security for the Arboretum and its Visitors, Staff, Buildings, Exhibits, Displays and Objects
- Protect guests, exhibits, displays and objects by politely enforcing Arboretum policies including those regarding climbing on exhibits, sculptures, waterfalls and associated hazardous areas.
- Monitor traffic on 3-Mile Drive and parking areas.
- Patrol exhibit, display gardens, trails and plan collections at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum via patrol cart or on foot; be visible to guests and ready to provide information on locations of exhibits, restrooms, classes, gardens, picnic areas and related items.
- Be the first to respond to any injury or accident that occurs on Arboretum grounds. File any injury or vehicle accident reports as necessary.

Membership Sales Assistant
Classification: Temporary/Casual Year-Round Position
Schedule: As Needed - Not to exceed 14 hours per week with occasional evenings and weekends
- Onsite membership desk sales & service for new, renewing, gift and donor level memberships, including dog add-on memberships and familiarity with dog commons.
- Acquire and share knowledge of Arboretum's history, mission, buildings and grounds layout, as well as daily and seasonal events and exhibits with guests/members.
- Greet all visitors and assist with way-finding, events and exhibits with an emphasis on serving members.
- Accurately convert new members with gate receipts, offer appropriate eligible discounts and know daily onsite group events/meetings that receive 10%discount and promote new and renewing sales accordingly. Receive and document member requests and changes i.e. contact info, household member change, as info relates to database and membership cards.
- When visitor traffic permits, respond to phone calls from member office line and return messages on member voicemail for member sales, renewals, concerns, etc., as well as internal emails/phone calls. Forward calls coming into membership to other staff and departments and follow-up when necessary to insure high level member service.

Interpretive Tram Specialist
As part of the Education Department and the public face of the Arboretum, the Interpretive Tram Specialist drives and narrates a one-hour tram ride for ticketed guests. For many guests, the tram ride is a first introduction to the Arboretum. It is important for the Interpretive Tram Specialist to provide an enjoyable, informative experience that conveys the Arboretum’s work and all the Arboretum offers in a way that encourages visitors to explore further after their ride, and to return in the future. The duties of this front-line interpretive staff position include:
? Perform daily equipment check on Tram, and refuel Tram at end of day
? Greet ticketed passengers, assist in boarding as needed
? Maintain a very high level of customer service for all Tram passengers

Landscape Gardener (Japanese Garden)
Oversee activities related to proper maintenance of the assigned gardens and collections within the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (MLA). Keep the MLA's mission statement and garden design intent in mind when fulfilling this role. This position is a full-time - seasonal (9-month) Civil Service 3 position; typically beginning March 1st and ending on November 30th annually.
(75%) Maintain Woody and Herbaceous Plant Collections:
Oversee activities related to proper maintenance of the assigned gardens and collections within the MLA. Keep the Arboretum's Mission statement and garden design intent in mind when fulfilling this role.
Train seasonal gardening staff and volunteers to carry out gardening duties with Best Management and Integrated Pest Management Practices.
Recruit, train and retain volunteers to work as volunteer staff in the assigned gardens.
Direct and lead in site preparation, planting, watering, staking, pruning, mulching, temporary labeling; protecting plants from animal and equipment damage.
Keep records of work planned and performed. In newly planted gardens, keep plant installation records and work with the curator of plants to assure accuracy.
Recommend horticultural management practices.
Recommend purchase or resupply of needed plants, tools and equipment.
Assure fertility of garden soils for best practices and plant growth.
(15%) Arboretum Educational and Miscellaneous Areas:
Perform other tasks as assigned or needed.
Develop and teach classes, author articles on gardens and plants, conduct tours and other duties related to education and outreach that will fulfill the Arboretum Mission Statement.
Recommend pruning and yearly plant care to fulfill the design intent of the garden or native restoration.
Recommend new Plant introductions, and unusual species.
Write Design Intent summary documents for the assigned gardens. Review with Horticulture Supervisors.
Work with Curator of Plant Collections to recommend yearly changes or upgrades to the plantings.
Control of invasive plants in the areas and gardens assigned. This includes scouting, record keeping, removal and or pesticide application; follow up care.
BA/BS with at least 2 years experience or a combination of education in landscape maintenance or closely related field education and experience commercial gardening, grounds maintenance and or greenhouse work to equal six years.
Valid driver’s license is required
Pesticide applicators license or ability to obtain a license within 30 days of hire.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Horticulture and 5 years experience with Japanese Gardens and related maintenance techniques.
Experience with growing and maintaining hardy azaleas, experience with Hostas and shade garden plants
