Pam Luer

Nature Sketchbook Series: Fall at the Arboretum with Pam Luer

(125-09-08-18-01)
Three Saturdays, September 8, 15 & 22
9:00 a.m. - noon
Pam Luer, artist and instructor for nearly 20 years, licensed product artist at Target, Crate & Barrel, and more

No experience necessary
What better way to learn to draw the Arboretum surroundings than under the guidance of a professional artist who specializes in natural-based designs? In this class you will spend the beginning of each class on a walk with a certified master naturalist or Master Gardener who will help sharpen your observational skills as you explore the flora and fauna of the Arboretum. At the same time, with Pam's expert guidance, participants will learn to observe and draw in new ways while expanding their understanding of the natural world. You will learn how to closely observe nature which will not only help you grow as an artist but expand your experiences in nature as well. This three-session workshop is for anyone who wants to add an element of art while "on the go" - in your backyard, park, or on your next vacation. In the spirit of John James Audubon, the sketchbook has long been favored as a visual journal by natural artists for its portability, flexibility and the freedom to experiment. All you need is a love of nature, an inquisitive eye, and a few carefully selected drawing tools. Put skills to use right away and enjoy the rewards of documenting the everyday beauty that is all around. Either bring your own supplies (see attached supply list) or purchase the $60 kit with this order which will be waiting for you on your first day of class.

Pastel: Owl (2-session class)

2 Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
February 16, 2019
February 23, 2019

Ann Solyst, Award winning painter and illustrator

Level: no experience required
This two week class will be a hoot! Owls are intriguing birds that easily capture the attention and curiosity of birders. Many different species are found here at the Arboretum. Explore the versatility of chalk pastels (a portable, dynamic medium with a painterly quality akin to oil painting) while learning how to draw an owl of your choice. Whether you are familiar with chalk pastel or you have never picked up a pastel in your life, this class will provide you with helpful techniques to explore this medium. After a demonstration and experimentation with pastel techniques, set to work creating a refined drawing that balances line, color, and composition. Receive individualized attention with Ann to draw at your own pace - with time to practice in-between classes on learned techniques. You will leave with a finished piece, and supplies to continue working with pastels. Supplies include eight pastel colors, professional paper, sketchbook, pencils, blending stump and kneading eraser.

Nature Sketchbooks & Spring Vignettes : All-Day Workshop with Pam Luer

125-02-21-19
Thursday, February 21, 2019
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Pam Luer, BFA in Studio Arts from the U of M and full-time artist and instructor for nearly 20 years, licensed product artist at Target, Crate & Barrel, and more

No experience necessary
Held in the lush oasis of the Meyers-Deats Conservatory as well as the Oswald Visitor Center, this sketchbook workshop "is for anyone who wants to take their art with them-from the backyard, to the park or on their next vacation," explains instructor Pam Luer. Coinciding with the Arboretum Flower Show, the beautifully installed spring floral vignettes are the perfect combination of blooming spring colors, dreamy fragrances and art....and a great February escape from the bleakest days of winter. As an outdoors person and traveling artist, Pam has always favored sketchbooks for their portability, flexibility and the freedom to experiment. Says Pam, "You don't need an easel and a studio to be a satisfied artist, all you need is a love of nature, an inquisitive eye, and a few carefully selected drawing tools. Our goal with sketchbooks is not to create a museum-quality finished piece. It's about using your sketchbook as a visual journal-something you can be inspired by and treasure for years to come. There's no right or wrong answer with a sketch, it's just an artistic impression that helps us capture a moment or catalog an idea for later exploration. Let's go see what's out there."
Either bring your own supplies (see supply list below) or purchase the $60 kit with this order which will be waiting for you on your first day of class.
