FEE: $63 member/$72 non-member
Awaken your sense of adventure and imagination while we play outside. Gather bits of nature from the woods and garden to create our own "town" or a "natural sculpture." YOUNG ARTISTS SERIES

Fridays, June 12-August 14, 9am-12noon
FEE per day: $23 member/$26 non-member

If desired, you can then enter one of your photos into the youth category of the Arboretum's weekend-long photography contest! (Bring your own camera.)

June 26: Observational Drawing
Create sketches in the Arboretum gardens and use those drawings to create a final work of art. Learn about composition and how to show realistic depth and detail.

July 3: Audubon Bird Painting
Go for an Arboretum bird walk (complete with field guide and binoculars) to try to observe birds in the wild. Examine the beautiful textures and colors of birds, then create a painting based on a favorite bird and learn how to place your bird in a realistic setting/background.

July 10: Introduction to Printmaking
With the Arboretum as inspiration, use insulation foam and safe carving tools to create a printing plate to use during class (and at home) to easily make colorful prints. Learn various carving techniques to show textures, backgrounds, and focal points.

July 17: Nature Animation: Zoetropes
A zoetrope mimics animation by showing a series of pictures within a revolving cylinder. Learn how to draw while thinking about movement, see your images come to life, and take home your own zoetrope.

July 24: Auguste Renoir: Chalk Pastel Lake Scene
Renoir was an Impressionist painter similar to Monet. He focused his art on people and landscape. Look at Renoir's art and use chalk pastels to capture a lake scene. This scene may include people, animals, boats, or buildings. Learn how light and the time of day can affect color.

American painter Georgia O'Keeffe is famous for her large floral paintings. Practice using wet and dry watercolor techniques to create a large painting of a flower.

August 7: Native American Mandala Collage
