COOKING AROUND THE WORLD June 19, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Fee: $28 member/$32 non-member Learn about traditional and seasonal foods while preparing interesting dishes from around the world with Chef Jenny Breen. We will use foods fresh from the farm and garden to make lunch together each day. Campers will receive recipes and plants to continue their culinary adventures at home!
STORYBOOK GARDENS Session I (1st-2nd grade grads): June 17-19, 9-12 noon Session II (2nd-4th grade grads): June 17-19, 1-4 p.m. Fee: $58 member/ $67 non-member Help us bring our favorite plant storybooks to life-as we explore Arboretum gardens we'll expand story themes, create story characters from natural materials and make outdoor storybook settings. Bring home storybook-based plantings!
SUPER SAFARI June 24-26, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Fee: $117 member/$135 non-member Hike off the beaten track and explore the extremes of the Arboretum. Investigate (& bring home) plant extremists-how do they survive on mountain-tops, in deserts, under water? Use the sun to cook a snack and build a sun-dial to tell the time. Bring your own lunch and water bottle each day.
TREES ARE "TREE-MENDOUS" Session I (1st-2nd grade grads): July 8-10, 9-12 noon Session II (2nd-4th grade grads): July 8-10, 1-4 p.m. Fee: $58 member/ $67 non-member Discover the value & magic of trees. Learn to identify MN trees and some of the creatures that call our trees home. Become a tree "doctor" at the Arboretum. Plant trees to take home.
PAPER, PLANTS & PEOPLE July 22-24, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Fee: $78 member/$90 non-member Become your own recycling plant as you mash plant parts into homemade paper. Learn how to extract color dyes from roots and leaves. Bring your own lunch each day; take home plants and all of your creations.
STILT WALKERS July 29-31, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Fee: $150 member/$162 non-member Get a tree's eye view! Join professional stilters from the group "Chicks on Sticks" and learn how to make and walk on stilts. Show off your newfound skills during a performance on Thursday evening, and take home your new stilts to keep! (Campers are welcome to also sign up for "Budding Arboretum Artists" and stay all day 9am-4pm.)
BUDDING ARBORETUM ARTISTS July 29-31, 1-4 p.m. Fee: $63 member/$72 non-member Taught by guest art instructor Gretchen Wagener, this camp is a chance for young artists to really immerse themselves and focus on observation, technical, and creative skills while using the Arboretum for inspiration. Explore a variety of mediums such as paint, pencils, oil & chalk pastels, and others.
COOKING GARDEN FRESH August 6-8, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Fee: $84 member/ $96 non-member Chef Jenny Breen will help you cook your way around the world using local ingredients fresh from the farm and garden. Prepare your own lunch each day and take home plants to grow for future culinary adventures on your own!
YOUNG ARTISTS SERIES Fridays, June 20-August 22, 9am-12noon Fee per day: $21 member/$24 non-member Learn from an expert! Join guest art instructors for a variety of Arboretum inspired art projects throughout the summer. You can sign up for just one day or all nine! Wear a paint shirt each day, and be ready for a fun, art-intensive experience! All classes are taught by Gretchen Wagener unless otherwise noted.
June 20: Observational Drawing Explore nature! Learn how to draw the plants, insects, and animals found at the Arboretum. Students in this class will use pencils and oil pastels to create a collection of drawings. Focus on observation, technique, and composition.
June 27: Tree Sculpture What can you find in a tree? What animals live there? Students will get to construct a three-dimensional tree that may include colorful leaves, birds, nests, pine cones, raccoons, squirrels, or anything else we find on our nature hike. Focus on construction, design, and creativity.
July 11: Navajo Weaving Look at Navajo designs and make a weaving of your very own. Students in this class will collect natural materials to put into their art. We will also discuss geometric and organic shape. Focus on drawing, cutting, painting, and weaving.
July 18: Aboriginal Art Tell a story using colorful animals and patterns. Students in this class will look at aboriginal paintings and use those examples to make a mixed media picture. We will also discuss shape and color combinations. Focus on pattern, color, and design.
July 25: Basket Weaving Accomplished basket weaver and experienced teacher Nancy Nelson will show you how to weave your own basket out of natural materials.
August 1: Seeing Photographically Learn the art of seeing photographically with guest instructor Michael DeSmit. Turn normal snapshots into great photos by adjusting how you frame a subject. Use the Arboretum's digital cameras or bring your own.
August 8: Comic Illustration Create a comic! We will look at popular comics and use animals and nature as our characters and setting. Will your comic strip tell of a monkey who eats only potatoes or a giraffe that likes to skip instead of walk? Focus on fun, creativity, and brainstorming.
August 15: Nature Painting Look at all the wonderful colors in the natural environment. How many greens do you see in a tree's leaves? How do you show shadows or different times of day when you're painting? We will explore these topics. Focus on color, painting, and composition.
August 22: Animal Masks Become your favorite animal! Fool your friends! Students in this class will observe the unique patterns and textures found on animal faces. We will learn collage techniques and methods. Focus on construction, design, and painting.
