Savage Plants and Big Bugs Oh My!
Suggested ages: 6 -13 year olds


Spend an action-packed hour at the Arboretum getting to know bugs...and the amazing plants that eat them! This larger than life field trip takes you to the hands-on microscopic workings of savage plants and big bugs! Find out how and why insectivorous plants (like the Venus Fly Trap!) attract, trap, and digest insects, then encounter an up close plant-vs-bug experience in the Learning Center greenhouse. Explore and understand the vital connections between insects and plants. TAKE HOME A BIG BUG-FRIENDLY (not insectivorous) PLANT! Be sure to leave time to visit the Arboretum and exhibits before or after your field trip time. Public picnic facilities at the Arboretum are free with gate admission and are available on a first come-first serve basis.
Adults should plan to attend with their child.

The Hungry, Hungry Plant: Capturing the Carnivorous plant in Watercolors (125-08-27-16)
Saturday, August 27, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Carlyn Iverson, botanical artist and illustrator for more than 200 textbooks and publications, NOAA artist and talented instructor.
Level: All levels encouraged to attend

Join this class for an artistic exploration of a unique group of plants who make their living by trapping insects for lunch. Learn about the behavior, anatomy and environment of Minnesota's Sundew and Pitcher plants, as you get up close and personal to live plant specimens that will serve as your muse. Carlyn's professional instruction includes essential "tips" will assist you in creating a one of kind watercolor painting. This class, inspired by the 'Savage Gardens' exhibit at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, is sure offer you new perspectives on the beauty and mystery surrounding carnivorous plants. You will leave with a beautiful painting, new skills, a new perspective for observing the natural world, and memories of a day filled with fun, laughter and learning.
