Arboretum to Host 2008 Orchid Symposium

Chanhassen, MN (Feb. 18) - Did you know there are more than 45 types of orchids growing natively in Minnesota? Indeed, these seemingly tropical plants are found in every county and in nearly every type of habitat in our state.

These fragile beauties of the plant world will be the topic of the 2008 Orchid Symposium at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum on Saturday, March 8. The event will take place in the Snyder Building Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is co-sponsored by the Orchid Society of Minnesota and the Arboretum.

Featured speakers will be: Ernie Gemeinhart, owner of EnLightened Orchids in Chicago; orchid grower Jayme Hennek; Kevin Olson, owner of Orchid Gardens in Minneapolis; Welby R. Smith, botanist with the state Department of Natural Resources and author of the book "Orchids of Minnesota"; and Sarah Tufford, a retired DNR scientist and orchid grower for 35 years.

Discussion topics include: "Growing Orchids the EnLightened Way: Gardening Under Fluorescent Lights"; "Native Orchids of Minnesota"; "Observing Orchid Habitats"; "Orchid Pests and Diseases" and "Mounting Orchids on Wood."

Registration fee is $35 for Orchid Society of Minnesota members; $55 for Arboretum members and $65 for others. Fee covers gate admission, symposium, handouts and catered lunch. To register, call 952-443-1422 or email: ArbEdu@umn.edu.
