Land Conservation and Clean Water Summit 2009 Convenes Sept. 24-25 at the Arboretum
Chanhassen, MN (Aug. 26, 2009) - The passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment last November - along with new statewide clean-water regulations - translate into exciting challenges and a heightened learning curve for local governments, green industry professionals and environmentalists.
The Land Conservation and Clean Water Summit 2009 - set for Sept. 24-25 - will attempt to address these concerns.
"In two days, you'll get the latest info on emerging issues - both the overarching goals for Minnesota and hands-on technical training on how to implement both land and water conservation practices," explains Kris Larson, interim executive director of the Minnesota Land Trust, one of the sponsors of the event which will take place at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen. Other sponsors include the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, the Arboretum, Embrace Open Space and Centex Homes.
The summit's aim is to help communities and natural resource professionals better manage our land and water resources and maximize new funding and technical opportunities.
Featured speakers include: Tom Schueler, head of the Chesapeake Stormwater Network and a national pioneer in stormwater management; Michael Mucha, public-works director of Olympia, Wash., a city that has implemented cutting-edge clean-water practices. Also speaking are Rep. James Oberstar, journalist Don Shelby, State Rep. Jean Wagenius, co-chair of the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR), and other experts in the field.
Representatives from the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council, Embrace Open Spaces, the State Department of Natural Resources, Great River Greening, Pheasants Forever, and various Minnesota cities also will participate in panel discussions.
Highlights include sessions on "Maximizing New Opportunities: Building Capacity and Forging New Partnerships for Land Conservation," and "Green Infrastructure for Clean Water: Tools for Planning, Design, and Maintenance."
The agenda on Thursday, Sept. 24, will address land-conservation issues and the agenda for Sept. 25 will address clean-water practices. Registration fee is $50 per day for members of the Arboretum, Minnehaha Creek Watershed District or the Minnesota Land Trust, and $60 a day for non-members.
