 Gardening and Grooving

Chanhassen, Minn. (April 6, 2010) - Gardening and grooving are on tap this weekend at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.  Here's a glimpse at the Saturday and Sunday line-up of activities:  

Plantcetera! Saturday, April 10:  Get the "dirt" on growing at Plantcetera, an all-day plant information fair set for Saturday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Oswald Visitor Center. The event is free with general Arboretum gate admission.  Plantcetera is presented by the Arboretum in collaboration with the Minnesota State Horticultural Society and University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners and will feature exhibits by a variety of local plant societies, clubs and horticultural experts.  

There's also a full slate of presentations scheduled for the Plant Stage.  Topics include:  "Vegetable Gardening" at 10:15 a.m., "Hardy Shrub Roses" at 10:45 a.m., "Ode to Minnesota Mushrooms" at 11:15 A.M.; "Espalier" at 11:45 a.m.; "Favorite Cold-Hardy Perennials" at 12:15 p.m.; "Carnivorous Plants" at 12:45 p.m.;  "Q & A on Trees & Shrubs" at 1:15 p.m.; "Techniques for Photographing Flowers" at 2:15 p.m.; "Bonsai" at 2:45 p.m.; "Daylilies for Minnesota" at 3:15 p.m. and "Planting a Mixed Succulent Container" at 3:45 p.m.

 Sunday, April 11:  Community Concert by Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies Concert Orchestra, 2-3 p.m., MacMillan Auditorium, Oswald Visitor Center.  This talented 80-member orchestra, under the direction of conductor Andrew Bast, will share its gift of music in an exhilarating hourlong performance that will include traditional works such as Bizet's Farandole from L'Arlessienne Suite and Offenbach's The Beautiful Helen Overture, as well as a unique collaboration with jazz and improvisational violinist Randy Sabien.  Renowned for his ability to inspire and educate young musicians in the art of improvisation, Sabien will perform as soloist on Sweet Georgia Brown and other jazz classics. The concert is free with gate admission ($9 adults; free for ages 15 & younger, free for members).

 Saturday & Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. : Weekend Family Fun: Bees & Blossoms, Marion Andrus Learning Center. What's the buzz about bees?  Discover who lives in a hive and what jobs they do.  Learn about garden VIPs (very important pollinators).  Sample a taste of sweet comb honey and make your own beeswax lip balm. Pot up flowers to feed the pollinators in your garden at home.  Free with Arboretum admission.

Coming up Next Week:  Happy Hour Thursdays return to the Arboretum!  From 4:30  to 6 p.m. Thursdays, beginning April 15 and continuing into fall, the Arboretum Restaurant will offer specially priced wine sampling and appetizers.  Regular-priced beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages available, as well.  Admission is free every third Thursday after 4:30 p.m. through October; two for one admission after 4:30 p.m. all other Thursdays through October.

 The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, the largest public garden in the Upper Midwest, is part of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota  and a community and national resource for horticultural and environmental information, research, and public education.
