2012 Summer Day Camps for 5th - 8th Grade Grads 

Summer Day Camp 

 

 

GIVE ME SHELTER! ENGINEERING AND DESIGN USING NATURE (995-07-24-12)
Tuesday-Thursday, July 24-26, 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
$75 member/$84 non-member, Price includes snacks and any project supplies, Limit 16, Learning Center

Experience the design process and creative problem-solving of working together as a team to construct shelters. Inspired by the famous Three Little Pigs, build using straw, wood, and bricks. Taught by Willis Bowman, an engineer, puppeteer, and co-designer and builder of the Arboretum's "Under the Oak" nature play area. Combine this camp with "Cocoa Camp" for a full-day option. 
 
   
COCOA CAMP (997-07-24-12)
Tuesday-Thursday, July 24-26, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
$102 member/$114 non-member, Price includes snacks and any project supplies, Limit 16, Learning Center

Dive into the world of chocolate! Follow the process of making chocolate from beans to bar. Discover the history and science of this plant that has changed the world. Plant a cocoa bean, make cocoa butter lotion, and of course, cook chocolate treats! Bring your own lunch and water bottle each day. Combine with the "Give Me Shelter!" camp for a full-day option.
 
   

Cooking With Ease
Every Other Friday, June 22-August 17, 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Fee per day: $32 member/$35 non-member, Price includes a snack and enough to bring home to share, Limit 16, Learning Center

Have fun while increasing skill and confidence in the kitchen. Prepare and sample recipes in class, then take home enought to share samples with your family too! Each day has a unique theme, so sign up for one or all five! (Food is as organic and local as possible.)

 
Pastry Experimentation Lab (997-06-22-12)
June 22 
Mix up a basic dough and add-in new combinations of spices, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Throw out the recipe, let your taste buds (and your creativity) be your guide!
 
   
Cheese Lovers! (997-07-06-12)
July 6
Cheese on pasta, cheese on salad, cheese on vegetables - three cheers for cheese! Learn to make homemade ricotta/paneer/cottage cheese. Make a variety of cheesy snacks, and discover why we need to thank plants for this tasty food!  
 
   
Breads and Spreads (997-07-20-12)
July 20
Make fresh bread and crackers, then harvest herbs from the garden to turn into tasty dips and spreads. Create pestos made from basil, parsley, and cilantro. Mix herbs like dill and chives with butter or cream cheese. Perfect food for snacks and parties! 
 
   
Chocolate Day! (997-08-03-12)
August 3
Enjoy making chocolate dipping sauce for pretzels and fruit, flourless chocolate cake, Mexican hot chocolate, and hard shell ice cream topping. Featuring different chocolate recipes from the three-day "Cocoa Camp" for those who want to register for both! 
 
   
Chips and Dips (997-08-17-12)
August 17
Become famous for your homemade chips and dips! Make chips using tortillas, potatoes, and even kale; dip them in fresh salsa, hummus, and more. 
 
   

Friday's Artist Series
Every Other Friday, June 15-August 10, 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Learn from an expert! Join guest instructors for a variety of Arboretum inspired art projects throughout the summer. You can sign up for just one day or all five! Wear old clothes, and be ready for a fun, art-intensive experience!

 
Plant Portraits - Observational Drawing (998-06-15-12)
June 15
Practice observing carefully to increase realism in pencil drawings. Explore colored pencil techniques to create depth and a feeling of aliveness. Taught by artist Gretchen Wagener. 
 
   
Impressionist Garden Painting (998-06-29-12)
June 29
Using the Arboretum as inspiration, and with artist Gretchen Wagener as a guide, create an impressionist style painting. Learn how to mix and blend colors for desired effects. 
 
   
Clay Sculpture (998-07-13-12)
July 13
Walk the Arboretum grounds and sketch inspiring plants or wildlife. Then use your sketches to guide your creation of a clay sculpture. Explore shape, texture, and proportion. Taught by artist Gretchen Wagener. 
 
   
Basket Weaving (998-07-27-12)
July 27
Weave bamboo reeds into a basket with the help of experienced basketry teacher Nancy Nelson. Take home additional reed material for a future creation! Different projects each summer for repeat campers.
 
   
Sculpting Nature (998-08-10-12)
August 10
Build magical sculptures from found natural materials. Use woodworking tools like hand saws and cordless drills; learn quick, clever ways of joining your materials. Taught by Willis Bowman, who is an engineer, puppeteer, and co-designer and builder of the Arboretum's "Under the Oak" nature play area.
