Summer Day Camps for 5th - 8th Grade Grads

COOKING AROUND THE WORLD
June 18, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Fee: $28 member/$32 non-member
Learn about traditional and seasonal foods while preparing interesting dishes from around the world with Chef Jenny Breen. We will use foods fresh from the farm and garden to make lunch together each day. Campers will receive recipes and plants to continue their culinary adventures at home!

LIVING GARDEN HISTORY
Aug. 5-7, 9 a.m.-noon, with optional supervised lunch 12 - 1 p.m. for those staying for afternoon photography class.
Fee: $58 member/ $67 non-member
Queen Anne used to hide melons in her pocket to mask her B.O.?! Travel through history and the Arboretum gardens as we see how people around the world have used plants for food, hygiene and healing. Take home plants and projects. For those who are staying for the afternoon photography class, bring your own lunch for a relaxing lunch break from 12-1pm.

IN-DEPTH DIGITAL SLR PHOTOGRAPHY
Aug. 5-7, 1-4 p.m.
Fee: member $81/ non-member $87
Learn from expert Michael DeSmit how to use the manual adjustments of a digital SLR camera (provided by the Arboretum). Work in small groups to practice making desired effects and effectively framing your subject. Take home a print of your best photo! This class builds on the lessons from the optional class the previous Friday afternoon. Max enrollment is 12, so sign up fast!

FRIDAY'S ARTISTS SERIES
Fridays, June 20-August 22, 1 - 4 p.m.
Fee per day: $21 member/$24 non-member
Learn from an expert! Join guest art instructors for a variety of Arboretum inspired art projects throughout the summer. You can sign up for just one day or all nine! Wear a paint shirt each day, and be ready for a fun, art-intensive experience! All classes are taught by Gretchen Wagener unless otherwise noted.

June 20: A Sense of Perspective
Learn how to create realistic space. Recreate the three-dimensional world around you on a flat surface. Students will learn one- and two-point perspective. Draw from direct observation and the imagination. Focus on technique, application, and creativity.

June 27: Printmaking
Students in this class will use positive and negative space to show plants and animals. Create designs that will be carved into a printing block and will then be printed onto various papers. This is a safe introduction to printmaking. Focus on design, carving, and printing.

July 11: Experimenting with Color
Who cares if the landscape is really green? Students in this class will learn how to use color to express feeling, emotion, and beauty. Look at artists such as Gauguin and Matisse. Focus on expression, observation, and composition.

July 18: Oil Pastel Animals
Learn use oil pastels! This class will show students how to properly blend and create realistic animal textures. We will also talk about how to place your animal within a convincing background. Focus on blending, technique, and fun.

July 25: Basket Weaving
Accomplished basket weaver and experienced teacher Nancy Nelson will show you how to weave your own basket out of natural materials.

August 1: Seeing Photographically
Learn the art of seeing photographically with guest instructor Michael DeSmit. Turn normal snapshots into great photos by adjusting how you frame a subject. Use the Arboretum's digital cameras or bring your own. This course can be used as a primer for the 3-day in-depth course the following week.

August 8: Ceramic Relief Garden
Create a textural picture with figure and shapes that pop up from a flat surface. We will take a walk through the gardens and use observational drawings that will be used in the creation of our relief art. Focus on technique, carving, and composition.

August 15: Watercolor Techniques
Have you ever wondered how to best show highlights and shadows? How about showing different times of day in your artwork? Students will create a series of paintings that show changing light. Focus on direct observation, technique, and application.

August 22: Chalk Pastel Garden
Blending is important in many art processes, but is especially important to artists working with chalks. Learn how to properly shade by using color opposites and use various blending tools. Focus on observational drawing, blending, and color.
