Chanhassen (Sept. 1, 2011) - "Dirt-O-Rama" is the theme of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum's summer 2012 exhibition, opening June 2, 2012. "Dirt-O-Rama" will feature a juried exhibition of five innovative designs inspired by the soil, our earth's "skin," its remarkable inhabitants and our human ties to it.
Artists, designers, architects, landscape architects, horticulturists, scientists, educators, environmental organizations and others are invited to submit proposals for the juried exhibition. Subject and/or media may be earth-based - for example, rammed earth, mudcloth, sculpted stone, clay and more.
"Dirt-O-Rama" also will include the Smithsonian's traveling exhibit "Dig It!" exploring all aspects of soil and all types of soils with activities for all ages; a hands-on compost lab demonstrating the composting process; plus a "Mud Pie Kitchen" in the Arboretum's Green Play Yard, set to open June 2012.
The Arboretum encourages proposals that consider the exhibition's theme from diverse perspectives, including those of an artist, a scientist, a designer, an educator or perhaps a collaborative team of these disciplines.
A mandatory pre-proposal meeting for all interested parties will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Arboretum. Please RSVP to Sandy Tanck at 952-443-1451 or tanck001@umn.edu.
Deadline for proposals is Monday, Nov. 7. Five winning designs will be selected on Nov. 28. Winners will each receive a $4,000 stipend. Their designs will be featured in Arboretum promotional materials and may be listed for sale through the Arboretum Gift Store.
Winning designers will meet with Arboretum staff in January to discuss installation and maintenance. Winners will install their designs on Arboretum grounds in May.
