Timely Garden Tips
Fall is a splendid time for many activities in your garden, not the least of which may be selecting and planting trees, shrubs, vines and perennials. When choosing plants, it's important to select for extended-flowering, fall color and winter interest. Also consider such qualities as disease resistance and fruiting qualities. Planting of hardy species and cultivars can be done any time until the soil freezes. Really! As long as the plants are planted properly, the roots have not suffered from freezing temperatures and they experience a good drenching or two after planting. It's also wise to apply an organic mulch that will insulate the soil from severe cold and free-thaw cycles. (Avoid mulching against stems or trunks though!) Special thanks for Arboretum staff member Jeffrey Johnson for these Garden Tips.

Children in Nature: Healthy Development by Design
Are you concerned that today’s children are spending less time in outdoor play? What are the implications for their physical and mental health? “Children in Nature: Healthy Development by Design,” a one-day Arboretum symposium on Thursday, Nov. 6, will address this vital issue. Keynote speakers are nationally known experts Stephen Kellert of Yale University and Robin Moore of North Carolina State University. The registration fee ($70 for Arb members/$80 for non-members) covers gate admission, lunch and a full day of formal presentations and informal roundtable discussions.
