Pumpkin Palooza Weekend
Curious about cucurbits (pumpkins and squash)? Then join us this Saturday and Sunday for Pumpkin Palooza Weekend at the Arboretum. In addition to our dazzling pumpkin displays, Oswald Visitor Center events include screenings of the “Bill’s Big Pumpkins” documentary about Bill Foss of Buffalo, Minn. (1 & 2:30 p.m. both days) and pumpkin-carving demos (1-3 p.m. both days). Or take the kids to Andrus Learning Center for the “mini-pumpkin head” craft activity (noon to 4 p.m., $1 per pumpkin). Also this weekend, take time to check out the spectacular, showy graceful spires in the Ornamental Grass Collection. They are simply gorgeous this time of year! Finally, this is the last weekend for apple-tastings at the Arboretum. You can sample yet-to-be-released apples from 1 to 3 p.m. both days in the Visitor Center.

Apples 'n' Apples
Speaking of apples, we have a bumper crop at the AppleHouse! Consequently, the AppleHouse will remain open through Nov. 9. Visitors can shop from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Nov. 2, with reduced hours (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Nov. 3-9. We have a large supply of big Honeycrisp apples and the crew just finished picking 150 bushels of Keepsake. At presstime, we had plenty of Fireside, Cortland, Connell Red and other varieties. (Please call 952-443-1409 for specifics.) The AppleHouse also is selling the same attractive and interesting pumpkins that are part of the Pumpkin Palooza display in the Oswald Visitor Center.

Garden Tip: Leaf 'em Alone!
Think twice before you carry those bags of leaves to the curbside. Instead of having them hauled to a municipal compost site, why not mulch them with a lawn mower into your lawn? They will help protect the crown of turf grass plants, add new nutrients to the soil and protect any nutrients you may have added through fertilizing. To prevent the matting of leaves and protect turf from mold, try to chop fallen leaves frequently with a power rotary mower. As long as you avoid buildup around tree or shrub trunks, you can leave the leaves where they fall in and around shrub beds. Think of mimicking the natural landscape. If you must, rake the leaves and collect them into a simple compost bin and add them to your garden as a surface mulch next fall. You’ll soon discover that composting is actually natural, simple and fun!
