Here's a healthy and fun way to celebrate the New Year's Eve holiday: The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum has designated Thursday, Dec. 31, as "Ar-BRRR-etum Day" -- a celebration of winter and outdoor recreation!
From 1 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 31, visitors will have a chance to try out snowshoe equipment and take a few lessons on-site, courtesy of Hoigaard's sporting goods. Snowshoe equipment will be available free of charge in the Oswald Visitor Center for those who wish to try out this popular winter sport.
With its 8.5 miles of cross-country ski trails and 3.3 miles of snowshoe trails, the Arboretum is a perfect place to enjoy a quick, refreshing loop, burn off those holiday calories and bid 2009 goodbye. In fact, Mpls./St. Paul Magazine named the Arboretum the best place for snowshoeing in the Twin Cities!
Ar-BRRR-etum Day participants receive complimentary hot chocolate from noon to 2 p.m., plus discounts in the Gift Store! Arboretum grounds are open from 8 a.m. to sunset and the Oswald Visitor Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
For trail condition information, call 952-443-1400, extension 7055. See you on the trails!
Part of the University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, the Arboretum is located in Chaska/Chanhassen, nine miles west of Interstate 494 on State Highway 5. It is open 363 days a year and gate admission is $9 for adults and free for members, University of Minnesota students and ages 15 and younger. For information, call 952-443-1400.
